Jesus Is To Be Worshiped by All.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow , in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father ( NIV ).

For this very reason also God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every [other] name, so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground, and every tongue should openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father ( NWT ).

The Watchtower is at some of its worst here in this passage, showing their varied methods of trickery.

Keep this in mind as you deal with the proponents of the Watchtower’s teachings; a deception is never 100 percent false. A good lie is one that looks like the truth until you take a closer look. As it is often said, the devil is in the details. So, let us look a little closer at what the Watchtower would have you believe.

As you will recall, Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Jesus was a created being, namely, Michael the archangel, and as such he cannot be equal to or be called God. Rather, he is “a god,” (John 1:1 NWT) a diminished version of the true God. Thus, at any point which seems to imply or express that Jesus is anything more than this lessened being, the New World Translation seeks to skew the language to support their interpretation.

Most modern translations have rendered this verse as “at the name of Jesus.” The NWT, however, gives the translation, “in the name of Jesus.” Technically, the NWT is correct, thus the verse means to say that at the last judgment “every knee will bow” … “in the name of Jesus” … “to the glory of God.”

The New Testament frequently gives us instruction about asking for or doing things in Jesus’ name, such as in John 14:13-14 where Jesus said, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

Witnesses might attempt to distinguish between “in” and “at,” saying we would only bow at the utterance of the name of Jehovah God, but we would do it in the name of Jesus. But the commentators of The Intervarsity Press Commentaries point out that this verse indicates that “bowing” means to

“bend,” in token of worship.
